Children’s Hearing Services Working Groups (CHSWG)

The Children’s Hearing Services Working Groups (CHSWG) are a multi-agency forum for all services involved in the identification, treatment and support of children and young people with hearing loss. There are five such groups serving the majority of Essex residents in the following areas:

North East Essex: Colchester Hospital

Chair:  Breeane Garland – breeane.garland@colchesterhospital.nhs.uk

Mid Essex: Broomfield Hospital

Chair:  Dr Job Cyriac – Job.Cyriac@meht.nhs.uk

South Essex: Southend Hospital and Basildon Hospital

Chair:  Dr Gareth Smith (Gareth.Smith@southend.nhs.uk)

West Essex: Princess Alexandra Hospital, Harlow

Chair:  Matthew Bysouth – matthewbysouth@essex.gov.uk

The CHSWG groups in Essex are made up of members from Newborn Hearing Screening Teams, Parents, Paediatric Audiologists, Specialist Teachers (Teachers of the Deaf), Speech and Language Therapists, Social Care Sensory Services, Ear Nose and Throat Consultants, Regional and Local representatives from the National Deaf Children’s Society.

The groups meet every three months in order to take a lead role in monitoring and improving the delivery of services to deaf children and their families in each area. The groups monitor the delivery of local and national quality standards, frameworks and targets for all services supporting deaf children in their area. The groups communicate service achievements and unresolved issues to strategic planners and ensure that children’s hearing services are high on the agenda of those responsible for planning and delivering services and resourcing at a strategic level. The CHSWGs offers advice and guidance in order to ensure high quality services for deaf children and their families. The views and participation of parents, children and young people are central to all discussions, planning and policy development within the groups.

Once every year, the five groups come together to meet as a Confederated CHSWG and address key issues affecting deaf children and their families across the entire county.
