Children’s Speech and Language Therapy – West Essex

The Children’s Speech and Language Therapy Service offers advice and support for children and young people with speech, language, communication and eating and drinking difficulties.

We work together with parents, carers and the team around the child, for example Health Visitors, Family Support Practitioners, doctors and teachers. We see children in a variety of community settings, for example our Family Hubs and Healthy Family Delivery Sites, early years settings and schools. We also visit some children with additional needs at home.

The service provides speech and language therapy in the community to children and young people who are registered with a West Essex GP and /or attend a school in West Essex.

We offer support for children aged 2 years 6 months to 18 years, where communication difficulties are impacting the ability to fully participate in daily life. Children with swallowing and complex feeding difficulties can be referred by a health professional at any age.

Parents/carers of pre-school children can access the service by our telephone Drop- In for advice and assessment. Parents/carers are encouraged to first access support through our Pre-Birth to 19 services. Concerns can be discussed with the Healthy Family Team (e.g. Health Visitor, Family Support Practitioner, School Health Nurse) as well as your child’s doctor, pre-school practitioner or teacher.

School aged children may be seen in school or clinic, usually following a referral from their teacher or SENCO. In most cases we require evidence that the child’s school has provided the expected ‘ordinarily available’ support and differentiation.

Please see our Speech and Language Therapy pages of the Essex Child and Family Wellbeing Service website for more guidance and information.

We do not provide the Speech and Language Therapy service to school aged children and young people who have Speech and Language Therapy included in an Education, Health and Care Plan.
