Elklan training for primary schools
ELKLAN provides a suite of training courses for those working with children and young people with speech, language and communication needs. The courses are accredited through APT Awards (previously known as the Open College Network South West Region – OCNSWR).
The Specialist Teaching and Preschool Service is currently offering the following ELKLAN course:
Speech and Language Support for 5 -11s
This is an externally accredited course for those working with children aged 5-11 years. Participants can work to achieve accreditation at level 2 or 3.
The course is written for staff supporting children with speech, language and communication needs (SLCN) in primary schools.
The content is determined through research of current literature and observation of best practice from within school settings and Speech and Language Therapy services.
It provides information and strategies to develop children’s communication skills and equips staff with innovative tools and methods to enhance children’s learning in the classroom.
The course is designed to be delivered over ten weekly (half day) sessions but may also be taught as an intensive three day programme.
It uses relevant teaching methods including practical activities, videos and group discussion.
This course focuses on the following topics:
- What is communication?
- Improving listening, attention and independent learning skills
- Listening, memory and understanding spoken language
- Modifying adult’s speech to help a child understand language
- Understanding beyond simple sentences
- Promoting vocabulary development
- Encouraging expressive language and narrative development
- Promoting effective communication and social skill
