School aged (5-19) Health Improvement service (HIS – Previously School Nursing)

This service is offered to all children and young people aged 5-19 in North East Essex. The service is delivered by integrated teams of qualified nurses who have undergone additional training, staff nurses, nursery nurses and HIS assistants.

  • The teams work with children and young people aged 5-19, their families, schools and the local community, delivering services in schools, local venues and children and young people’s homes.
  • The team provide health advice and support on healthy lifestyles e.g. healthy eating, healthy weight, dental health, sexual health and risk taking behaviour.
  • The teams work closely with parents/carers, school and education providers to promote healthy lifestyle’s.
  • The team offer health reviews and advice to support children and young people to reach their full potential.
  • The team offer support and advice around childhood immunisation which will help protect against disease and infection.
  • The team provide specific support for families with complex needs.
  • The team work with other services to ensure children and young people are able to live in a safe environment.
  • The team can offer onward referral to other support services i.e Community Consultant Paediatricians, Speech & language Services.
  • The team offer drop in clinics in schools and communities
  • The team work with schools to undertake health profiles of the school and focus where support is required

Who the service provides for

The service is offered to all children and young people of school age who live in North East Essex from when they are due to enter school at rising ‘5’ up to their 19th birthday.

The service is offered irrespective of where a child receives their education whether this is in their local school; school outside of area, home educated or are not currently receiving an education.

How the service is accessed

All school aged children are registered into the service on transfer from their Health Visitor when they reach school age or when they transfer into North East Essex from another area.
