Together for Short Lives

Together for Short Lives is the leading UK charity for all children with life-threatening and life-limiting conditions and all those who support, love and care for them. We support families, professionals and services, including children’s hospices. You can find out about the range of support we provide for families here

Together for Short Lives’ Helpline (0808 8088 100) provides information for families, carers and professionals. It is open for anyone who looks after or knows a child or a young person with a life-limiting condition. It is open between 7am and midnight, seven days a week, but with the core helpline staff available from 10-4 Monday to Friday. Calls are free for callers from a landline as well as specified mobile networks.

Families can also call the Helpline to access Together for Short Lives’ Advocacy Support Service. This can take referrals from any family living in England or Wales who would benefit from the support of a legal professional, acting as a volunteer advocate to assist them in getting the support they need.

Together for Short Lives has a family community which families can join. Free of charge, families can receive a newsletter, read about other families’ experiences, share their own family story and learn about how to get more involved in the work of Together for Short Lives.

Together for Short Lives offers a range of resources for families which are available online here. These can be downloaded for free or ordered in hard copy.

Together for Short Lives offers resources to help ensure that children who need palliative care can benefit from the special educational needs and disability (SEND) reforms. These are available for free here and include resources for:

  • education providers (to help them give children and young people with life-limiting conditions access to education)
  • families (on personal budgets)
  • voluntary sector providers of children’s palliative care (on the new SEND system and on personal budgets).

Together for Short Lives has established a Transition Taskforce ( to lead the development of a co-ordinated approach to providing care and support to young people with life-limiting or life-threatening conditions. It works to ensure that young people approaching adulthood with life-limiting or life-threatening conditions make the transition to adult services and live their lives as independently as possible according to their wishes – while receiving the care and support they and their families need. The taskforce works to engage young adults and parents and provide a platform to voice their needs. Young people who need palliative care can join the ‘Young Avengers Group’ which presses for services and resources to be developed which meet the needs of young people. The Transition Taskforce also has a parent reference group.
