Nathan and Jonathan – securing a job and returning to work during COVID-19

Nathan is a young person with SEND and Jonathan works in the Targeted Employment Team at Essex County Council. At the start of the coronavirus pandemic, they worked together to find employment opportunities and industry pathways based on Nathan’s profile.

Jonathan first met Nathan at his home. This helped Nathan to feel comfortable and supported by his family during their first meeting. It was also a good opportunity for him to show Jonathan the brick barbeque and shed he built with his dad.

Nathan wanted to start work as soon as possible. He was self-motivated and had recently passed his driving test. Jonathan was able to secure a four-week self-employed work trial where Nathan would be maintaining a small garden area and mini vegetable allotment.

Following on from this work trial, Jonathan secured an £100 development grant from the Princes Trust so that Nathan could buy tools to help him with his new role. This opportunity didn’t quite work out for Nathan so with Jonathan’s help, he was able to get a work trial at PMC Landscapes. Jonathan supported both Nathan and the employer to do this.

Jonathan started the placement with Nathan. As well as doing the work, they were able to spend time working on other skills like communication with colleagues, good timekeeping and work speed.

After a successful four-week trial and job coaching from Jonathan, Nathan became a permanent member of the PMC Landscape team. This also resulted in PMC becoming a recognised Disability Confident Employer.

What PMC Landscapes said

“Nathan has now been with PMC Landscapes for some time now and he is working amongst his colleagues whilst completing his duties. In the short space of time Nathan has been working with us, he has settled in and become a real asset to the company. Regardless of the type of task we set him, he approaches it with the same conscientious and committed attitude and carries it out to the best of his ability, which is a quality seldom found in lads of a similar age to Nathan. He has an excellent sense of timekeeping and an easy-going, friendly nature. We hope to have Nathan with us for a long time to come.”
