Special Senses Day at Colchester Zoo
July 3, 2018
Special Senses Day is an annual inclusive event that aims to make the zoo more accessible for all abilities. Throughout the day many of the displays are British sign language interpreted with opportunities to try alternative activities, handling, and themed sensory touch and smell tables.
This years event took place on Saturday 23rd June where 3 members of the Specialist Teaching and Preschool Service were welcomed to be part of what is one of the biggest highlights of the zoo calendar!
It was an incredible day, with the team reaching a variety of children and families including a diverse range of ages and need. This year, the team delivered stories including Shark in the park and going on a bear hunt, provided a sensory tent, an ice/water paddling pool, audio devices, scents and some great textures like mud and snow!
The atmosphere at the zoo was ‘buzzing’ with many guests providing positive feedback.
If you are interested in attending next years’ Special Senses Day, keep an eye out on the Essex Local Offer website and Facebook page for more information nearer the time.
